What OnePlus opened
OnePlus has launched a ColorOS 17 open beta for five phones in India: the OnePlus 15, 15R, 13, 13R and 13s. An open beta is unfinished software offered to a wider group of volunteers before the final version is ready — much like sharing a preview copy before publishing the finished edition.
Recruitment runs from October 9 through October 12, a four-day window. The program covers five phone models, but OnePlus hasn’t stated how many owners or individual devices can participate.
Eligibility is narrow. The phone must be an unlocked, unbranded Indian unit. That excludes carrier-locked models and phones from other countries during this wave. OnePlus also requires each model to be running a particular OxygenOS 16 baseline build — the required version of its system software — before it can join.
Why this is more than a routine update
ColorOS 17 is based on Android 17 and introduces what OPPO calls Fluid Design, a visual style featuring frosted-glass effects and updated animations. It also adds AI tools and puts OPPO, OnePlus and Realme phones on a shared ColorOS platform.
That shared platform matters because OnePlus has announced that OxygenOS will be retired for eligible devices. The company says existing users can choose whether to move to ColorOS 17 during the period covered here. It also says the transition won’t change its software-update commitments, warranty coverage or after-sales support.
One important detail is still missing: OnePlus hasn’t provided model-by-model dates for when OxygenOS support will end.
The performance figures need context
OPPO says ColorOS 17’s Aurora Engine cuts app start-up time and memory use while apps are running by 25%. It also claims the Tidal Engine improves the system’s ability to keep background apps open by 55.6% compared with ColorOS 16.
Those figures come from OPPO’s own benchmark tests, conducted under its test conditions on unspecified reference hardware. They aren’t independent measurements of the five OnePlus models included in this Indian beta. There are also no model-specific comparisons showing how the beta affects battery life, heat or everyday performance against OxygenOS 16.
Versions of ColorOS 17 labeled stable began rolling out in China on October 8, including for the OnePlus 15. That confirms the software’s release status in China, but it doesn’t show how the Indian beta performs on each eligible phone.
The OnePlus 15 rollback catch
Installing the beta on a OnePlus 15 isn’t expected to erase existing data, though OnePlus still advises owners to make a backup first.
Leaving the beta is more disruptive. Returning a OnePlus 15 to stable OxygenOS 16 requires a rollback package — a restore file that replaces the beta software. The process formats the phone’s internal storage, erasing anything that hasn’t been backed up.
The available information doesn’t establish whether the OnePlus 15R, 13, 13R or 13s has a rollback option that preserves data. Owners of those models shouldn’t assume it does.
Advice on daily use differs
Some coverage describes ColorOS open betas as suitable for daily use if the owner can tolerate minor bugs or unfinished features. Other reports advise against installing this beta on a primary phone because early software can be unstable and rolling back may erase data.
There are no model-specific measurements that settle the question. A stable version in another market and OPPO’s performance claims don’t measure the reliability of these Indian beta releases.
When will the stable Indian release arrive?
OPPO scheduled its global and Indian ColorOS 17 launch event for October 13, 2026, at 2:30 p.m. IST. An event date isn’t the same as a confirmed update date for every OnePlus phone.
Precise Indian release dates for stable ColorOS 17 on the OnePlus 13, 13R, 13s, 15 and 15R remain unannounced. Reports suggesting India could receive it around the global launch are expectations, not a published model-by-model schedule.
